EEX Gas & Sustainability Markets Newsletter | April 2023
Dear Customers, Partners and Friends of EEX,

Platts recently reported: Both the Dutch TTF and UK’s NBP front-month contracts reached lows last seen in December 2021. We can neither say that our gas markets are “out of the woods” nor that the risk of supply is averted. However, we are seeing strong indications that the market situation is calming down.

We at EEX welcome these developments. Extreme volatility and price spikes are a challenge for our trading and clearing operations, but even more for the economy and consumers. As far as our operations are concerned, we are proud to have provided both stability and security over recent months.

EEX has consistently voiced its concerns about the gas price cap (Market Correction Mechanism) and continues to be concerned about the possible implications of such a price cap. We´ve partnered with all stakeholders involved: clients, regulators, associations. We, at EEX, have held countless talks to ensure security, stability, and to provide feasible solutions to manage the new regulation. I would like to say thank you to all who contributed, for all your thoughts, your time, and passion!

Acknowledging that a price cap has a legal basis with the Council’s regulation, we have fully embraced the given situation and are well prepared. We have taken comprehensive measures to deal with the situation and to continuously offer our participants trading on the TTF – even though the prices are way below the threshold, where the market correction mechanism would kick in. You will find detailed information on the Market Correction Mechanism, combined with a request: Please approach us and share your concerns, ideas and wishes with us. We will master this situation best together - just like our claim: Building markets together.

And maybe this storm will pass us - let’s keep our fingers crossed. Enjoy the newsletter!

Kind regards,

Steffen Köhler
